Our History

Twenty-eight seasons from a single borrowed spotlight to a resident company of thirty-four.

1998 — today

Lit By A Lantern Factory

Lumen began in 1998 when director Ruth Adler leased the empty Harlow Lantern Works on Lantern Row for one summer of Shakespeare. The audience sat on factory pallets; the ghost light was a work lamp. Every seat sold.

By 2004 the company had a year-round lease. By 2011 the Grand Hall — 420 seats raked around a thrust stage — opened on the factory floor. The pit orchestra followed in 2015, the studio stage in 2019, and the lantern in our mark has burned ever since.
